OFFICERS 2023-2024

kim.png
President: Kim Vu

Hey y’all! My name is Kim and I am a 4th year Biological Sciences major. I’m super excited to be your President for the 2023 - 2024 school year and getting to work alongside such an amazing board! Part of my job is planning GMT’s medical mission trips and making sure GMT is always at its best! A few things about me, I was born in Saigon, Vietnam and I’m a huge foodie so I’m always down to try new restaurants/food spots! In my free time I'm usually watching anime/K-dramas, painting, part taking in some form of self-care (massage, retail therapy) or trying new recipes to cook!

After covid, I found it difficult to meet new people during my second year especially because I was a commuter so I decided to get more involved by joining clubs. Once I heard about GMT, I decided to show up to one of the workshops and since then GMT has become my home away from home. I always felt welcome and supported here by everyone and I also met some of my closest friends within this club! Now as president, my goal is to create something like this for you as past GMT board has done for me! So if you ever need anything, don’t be afraid to reach out! Can’t wait to meet each and everyone of y’all!! :)

Vice President: Raymond Truong

Hey GMT fam! My name is Raymond and I will be the Vice-President for GMT. I am a fourth-year biological sciences major with a minor in bioinformatics. I am hoping to pursue a career in health and am currently on the pre-PA route.

I joined GMT during my 2nd year after the whole virtual school year situation in hopes to meet new people and create new friends! I ended up with a second family here and created so many fun memories. My highlight from being in GMT was the Dominican Republic trip which was an extremely meaningful experience. I was able to work closely with doctors and be in a team to treat hundreds of patients!

A bit about me is that I was born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley. I’m currently a Community Assistant at Vista del Campo Norte and I host cool programs so come through if you see one of my flyers or say hi whenever I’m working ;) Some of my interests include marvel, anime, playing music, and volleyball.

Our club provides a lot of opportunities and I encourage everyone to take advantage of what GMT has to offer! Cool beans.

Workshop Coordinator: Cyril Sumarinas
cyril.png

HellooOoOoOOOOoooo everybody. My name is Cyril Sumarinas and I will be one of your new Workshop Coordinators. Some of my responsibilities include presenting cool and interesting medical topics, bringing guest speakers, and creating mock clinics for all of you.

I am currently a 3rd year Biological Sciences major. I am “Pre Med” but after OChem destroyed me, I am more “Pre-Health.” I love spending time with my friends and acting like an absolute menace with them. In my free time, I love spending time alone and unwinding by doing brain dead chores such as drinking the sheets, folding dishes, walking my fish, or attending lectures. Some of my hobbies include putting on Ratatouille music and cooking up something I found on Tasty or TikTok. I also like hanging out with my family and goofing around with all my cousins, nieces and nephews.

I came into GMT without knowing all but one person. I was poop out of my butt scared when I joined because again, I didn’t know anyone. But as I started attending more events and getting to know all the wonderful members, I started to really love going to this club. The community was so welcoming and kind, so I wanted to give back and return what was given to me. Hopefully with me as your new Workshop Coordinator I can make it as wonderful to you all too!

yana.png
Workshop Coordinator: Yana Khetiya

Hi Guys!! My name is Yana Khetiya and I am one of the two workshop coordinators for this upcoming school year. You guys will be seeing a LOT of me and my wonderful co Cyril at our biweekly workshops where we present on various topics relating to the field of medicine and how it relates to our organization!

I am a rising 3rd year biology major (specializing in human biology) and a potential psychology minor here at UCI. I am on the pre-med track but am still exploring different specialties I might be interested in. Right now, I am leaning towards family medicine or pediatrics, but we’ll see what the future holds! Some of my hobbies are exploring new hiking trails and coffee shops in OC, watching the sunset (Treasure Island in Laguna is my favorite!), and spending quality time with my friends and family.

I joined GMT fall of my freshman year and it has definitely been one of the best decisions I made. I have met such an amazing and supportive community of people all while making a considerable impact on underserved and vulnerable populations both in Orange County and abroad. GMT is an incredible organization, and it offers so many diverse opportunities for its members so I encourage all new members to come out to as many events as possible! I hope to meet each and everyone one of you :)

nolan.png
Advocacy Coordinator: Nolan Tanji

Hey everyone!! My name is Nolan and I am one of your new advocacy coordinators, alongside Melyssa! I am a fourth-year Neurobiology major from Aiea, Hawai'i. I am really excited and looking forward to creating new and fun volunteering opportunities for you guys!

I am pre-med, but I have no idea what specialty I want to go into. As of now, I am thinking of orthopedics, emergency medicine, or anesthesiology, but I am open to learning and exploring more fields. In my free time, you'll find me hiking to the top of some mountain, bodyboarding at the beach, taking a stroll on the golf course, or dry scooping creatine at the gym. Also, ask me about my ceramics pieces! (I was a wizard on the pottery wheel)

Before coming to UCI, I had gone on a mission trip and found a passion for helping the underserved communities. So, when Raymond introduced me to GMT and I learned about their mission to provide free healthcare to underserved areas, I joined right away! I stayed because out of all the clubs I joined at UCI, not to sound cliché, GMT provided me with a home away from home. Since joining GMT in my second year, I've had so many memorable moments, from the trip to Peru, winter retreat, to all the workshops, socials, and volunteering events!

I'm so excited to meet all of you and plan some fun events for you guys! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions, need advice, or just want to talk!

Advocacy Coordinator: Melyssa Karcher

Hiiiii!! My name is Melyssa and I am a third-year student double-majoring in Public Health Sciences and Political Science. As your new advocacy coordinator, I’m thrilled that Nolan and I hold the honor of sharing volunteer opportunities with you all while collaborating with organizations that aim to serve vulnerable and underserved populations. I’m especially interested in global medicine and the intersection of politics and health inequities. By virtue of my deeply rooted interest in ethnic health disparities both locally and across the globe, GMT was the first club I joined as a first-year student during the fall quarter. Since then, I have been fortunate to attend mission trips in the beautiful countries of the Dominican Republic and Peru.

Since I was little, I’ve had an infatuation with stop-motion animation films and with reading, so I’ll likely stir up a conversation regarding anything film/book related. I thrive off spending time outdoors and walking aimlessly only hoping to discover new study and coffee spots. I’m excited to meet you all and I hope you all take advantage of all the opportunities GMT puts on the table 💕!!!

sahara2png.png
Project Coordinator: Sahara Espino

Heyyy! My name is Sahara Espino and I am a fourth year Biological Sciences major! I am hoping to pursue a career in the medical field, specifically under the branch of pediatrics.  I am very excited to be one of your Project Coordinator for 2023-2024, alongside Jocelyn. I feel honored to carry on this position and continue combating food insecurity while encouraging elementary students from low-income elementary schools to pursue a higher education. My interest in serving families of low socioeconomic status stems from my family’s migration from Mexico to the United States where I recognized the prevalence of lower educational achievement, poverty, and the lack of access to health care.

I was born and raised in a small town near Guadalajara, Jalisco, until my family and I immigrated to the states with the intention of pursuing the American dream. Quickly, I recognized that there are certain barriers within the system that aimed to exclude us, hence I have been an advocate for first-generation college students and have involved myself in clubs here on campus that aim to shed light on the issue, like GMT. GMT also provided me with multiple resources that facilitated my pre-med journey and a welcoming community that made me feel like home. Outside of school, I love exploring new coffee shops and going on runs, while blasting Bad Bunny or J.Cole, of course. I also have a huge passion for traveling and getting to familiarize myself with new cultures. I cannot wait to spend my fourth year with an amazing board and continue to advance GMT. I am excited to meet you all soon! :)

jocelyn.png
Project Coordinator: Jocelyn Vielma

Hello everyone! My name is Jocelyn and I am so excited to be one of your new Projects Coordinators alongside Sahara, where we will be the ones in charge of anything food pantry and RAMP related!

I am a third year Public Health Sciences major and Chicano/Latino Studies + Global health double minor with the goal of applying and attending medical school in the future and becoming a surgeon. I’m originally from San Diego, California, so I’m not too far from UCI and I do love going home whenever I can for some home cooked meals!

I joined GMT during the beginning of my second year, hoping to find people with similar interests as me in a club that had to do with a passion of mine, medicine, and I am so grateful to have been able to find that within GMT. The people in GMT are truly people I consider to be family and my goal with this club is to be able to continue that alongside while being able to help communities beyond UCI.

Alongside that, some of my interests include talking about my dog (I’m a dog mom), Marvel, Disney, listening to Christmas music during summer, and binge watching Modern Family. I am so excited to be meeting you all, feel free to reach out to me for anything at all!

donia.png
Financial Coordinator: Donia Mohtashami

Hi friends!! My name is Donia Mohtashami and I’m going to be one of your financial coordinators this year alongside Kellie ❣. I’m a 4th year Biological sciences and chemistry double major, and I transferred to UCI fall of 2022.

I have lived in Irvine for almost 8 years now but am originally from Iran. I’m a huge animal lover (especially dogs and elephants), a big foodie and I’m very adventurous. I love to travel and explore new places and familiarize myself with new cultures.

I am a pre-dental student and my biggest goal is to do mission trips as a dentist and have the ability to help the underserved community which is why GMT interested me so much. Coming into UCI my biggest interest was finding a club that does mission trips. Once I heard about GMT during the anteater involvement fair in fall I knew I wanted to be a part of this club. I never expected for this club to become such a big part of my life, I had initially joined for the trips but was hoping to be more involved in the pre-dental club. Once I met all the board members during the first social, I knew this club would be a much better fit for me, I was able to relate with many of the board members I met and I felt extremely welcomed into the GMT community. I hope I am able to help others feel as comfortable as I did joining GMT throughout this year! ♥️

Financial Coordinator: Kellie Takai

Hiii!! My name is Kellie Takai and I’m one of your financial coordinators for the 2023-2024 school year. I’ll be working alongside my cool co-coordinator Donia to host different fundraising events, manage and lower GMT’s expenses, and create cost friendly budgets :o

About me <33 I’m currently a third-year biological sciences major from Pearl City, Hawai’i. I am hoping to pursue a career in the medical field with an interest in pediatrics :) I love iced matcha tea lattes, debriefing MCU movies, binge-watching k-dramas, taking pics on my digicam, & reading at the beach!

I joined GMT after hearing about their opportunity to provide medical services in underserved communities and to gain some guidance on the healthcare path. Though, I discovered so much more that came with the club such as volunteering projects, socials, informative workshops, and a lil community with the best people. GMT was the first club that provided me with a wholesome environment of like-minded individuals and opportunities to help others. I can’t wait to meet you all 🫶🏻

chloe.png
Social Coordinator: Chloe Tong

Herro :3 My name is Chloe and I’m one of your new social coordinators. I am currently a 4th year studying Public Health Sciences and minoring in health informatics. I’m from the 626 area so east of LA. Currently I am leaning towards nursing, aBSN or MSN programs. So if you have any questions please let me know. (: I love tufting, swimming, basketball, and going to the beach. Honestly I was so lucky to have been paired up with an amazing mentor, shout out SADAT, who helped me integrate into GMT during covid. I met some amazing people along the way when I started to come out more. GMT was a great balance of growing academically and socially for me. Every event I went to felt so welcoming and impactful in the volunteers we were doing to help our community and even beyond that. I love what GMT stands by and hope to continue spreading the same energy to newcomers and similar faces.

julie.png
Social Coordinator: Julie SooHoo

Heyyyyyy guys! My name is Julie, and I’m one of your new social coordinators alongside my co, Chloe <3. We plan bi-weekly social events for the GMT fam and bigger ones like Winter Retreat and Spring Banquet to help all of our members feel like our organization is an inclusive environment.

I am a 3rd year Psychology B.S. and Biological Sciences double major (I know right… I’m crazy for that one). I’m from Elk Grove in Sac County. I am also on the pre-med track, hoping to specialize in psychiatry.

I joined GMT during my 1st year because I was struggling to make friends who were like-minded, and everyone here was super nice and friendly and made me feel like I belonged so I wanted to give that feeling back to prospective members who might be feeling the same.

My interests include basketball and watching football, hot girl walking, dancing, singing, watching anime or Marvel, going to Disneyland (& collecting pins), and having a pre-med TikTok acc… pls don’t try to find me LOL. Feel free to reach out to me anytime about anything!

kathy.png
Internal Publicity Coordinator: Kathy Nguyen

Hello hello! My name is Kathy Nguyen and I’m your internal publicity coordinator for the 2023-24 school year! I’m currently a 4th year human biology major! As internal publicity, my role is to design flyers, t-shirts, and capture pictures at GMT events alongside my co-coordinator Jana<3

Some things about me, I am from the San Gabriel Valley. Currently, I aspire to become a PA and I am interested in working pediatrics! Some of my interests include anime, kpop (i luv nct and txt), Marvel, stationery (please ask me about my pens and stickers), and video games :O

After my first year being completely online, I found it extremely difficult for me to get more involved and make new connections. I initially joined GMT because of my friends, but grew to love the club due to how welcoming and supportive everyone was! Through GMT, I’ve found some of my closest friends and was able to be more involved in my community.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at our events this upcoming school year <3 Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

jana.png
External Publicity Coordinator: Jana Helwani

Hii hii!! My name is Jana and I will be this school year’s external publicity coordinator alongside my amazing co-coordinator kathy! I am a 4th year Biological Sciences major, on my pre-PA journey! Everything you will see this coming year on GMT’s social media accounts will be mostly posted by me so stay tuned!!

More about me, I am originally from Syria, but I was raised in Dubai my whole life. I moved here to the states only three years ago. I am a huge foodie and I think one big reason I love being here in Cali is the endless options of new foods to try! I’m an adrenaline junkie and am always down to explore new things! One thing though, is that I do tend to make the gym and weight lifting my whole personality but it is what it is. If y’all are ever up for a lift hit me up!!!

Moving here during peak covid was incredibly hard and I did not get to meet people or make friends for over a year. After transferring to UCI, I did not have the slightest idea that a club like GMT would give me life-long friendships and memories. GMT and its people has made me feel very welcome and loved, so I hope we can give you the same welcoming feeling as you become part of our family <3
